Unveiling antimicrobial stewardship competence among Italian nurses: results from a nationwide survey

  27 February 2025

This study examines the development of nursing competencies in antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) in Italian clinical nursing. A cross-sectional online survey of 1,651 nurses found that workplace and regional factors significantly impact AMS practices and attitudes. Surgical nurses scored higher, while critical care nurses scored lower. Workplace characteristics also influenced nurses’ scores, with surgical nurses having lower perceptions of structure. The study highlights the need for targeted interventions and education initiatives to enhance AMS competencies and improve patient outcomes.
